由来
本曲以一个短小的引子作为开始。接着，华丽而威风凛凛的主部主题强有力地呈现出来；与主部主题形成巧妙对照的是乐曲中段那具有民谣之美的旋律。埃尔加这部作品的成功，在很大程度上要归功于这个中段。这一旋律不仅被爱德华七世用作《加冕颂歌》，英国作家豪斯曼还为此写了抒情诗《希望和光荣的国土》。可以说，这段旋律在英国的地位，几乎与国歌一样神圣。此外，甚至在美国许多院校的毕业典礼上，学生们也是在这支旋律的音乐声中领取文凭，就连几次英国皇室婚礼也演奏了这首《威风堂堂进行曲》，其影响之深远可见一斑。随后，主部主题与中段主题相继再现，只是中段主题在整个乐队奏出的节奏型强调下，音响增强了，也更宽广了。最后又回到主部主题，并加快速度，干脆利索地结束全曲。

历史
艾尔加
曾经在1901至1903年间写过五首《威风堂堂进行曲》(Pomp and Circumstance Marches, Op. 39)。当1901年新完成的第一首在伦敦由作曲家亲自指挥首演时，全场听众为之疯狂，纷纷起立和大声喝彩，使音乐会无法继续，一直到艾尔加连续把这首曲子奏了三次，场面才平静下来。英国国王爱德华七世
提议作曲家把它加上歌词，於是成了英国人人会唱的《希望与荣耀的土地》(Land of Hope and Glory)。本来已经相当有名的艾尔加此时更加声名大震，不但被英王封他为爵士，美国大学还送给他名誉学位,英国节日大厅一连三日举行艾尔加作品音乐会,令他名利双收。 -
